EGRET MOON
Motes whirl in light
like dervishes in a sunbeam
By the shore there is a kaleidoscope
of reflected, refracted color shadow and light
The tidal lake is full of mirrors
and holds, full, dawn’s powder moon
An egret studies the lagoon
Within sight, new and old bridges span
the Oakland San Francisco Bay
Two cities roost in an impossible sky
From their airports, travelers jump into space
Here at a Berkeley city lagoon
in league with streams that cradle the universe
and the watery hands that cradle the earth
an egret returns from the moon
